As the sole UX designer and lead for Suncentral, I owned the end-to-end transformation of Sun Life’s primary portal for independent Canadian advisors. I replaced a 20-year-old legacy system with a modern, role-based ecosystem, designing every workflow from the ground up to empower advisors with faster, personalized digital tools.
Modernizing a 20-year legacy ecosystem for a diverse advisor network
Suncentral (formerly Advisor Site) was a foundational but aging legacy platform that had reached a breaking point. After two decades of incremental updates, the portal had become a fragmented collection of disconnected tools, pages, and workflows. While it remained the primary gateway for Canadian independent advisors to manage Sun Life products, the "one-size-fits-all" interface failed to recognize the distinct needs of its users.
The redesign was a high-stakes enterprise challenge defined by three core friction points:

Role Fragmentation: The platform served multiple distinct personas (Advisors, Assistants, and Back-Office staff) yet delivered an identical experience to all. This forced users to navigate irrelevant tools, increasing cognitive load and slowing down high-frequency tasks.

Scalability Debt: Twenty years of "bolted-on" features had created a platform that lacked a cohesive information architecture, making it difficult for the business to introduce new digital solutions without further complicating the user journey.

Evolving Expectations: Independent advisors increasingly compare their professional tools to modern B2C experiences. The legacy site’s lack of personalization and clarity was becoming a barrier to advisor productivity and brand loyalty.
The Goal: To transform Suncentral from a static repository of links into a unified, scalable, and role-based ecosystem. My objective was to modernize the experience while preserving critical legacy functionality, ensuring that the platform could support the complex daily workflows of a modern financial practice.
